Topic: “Editing Jātakas in the 15th Century: Jātakavisodhana by Ariyavaṁsa and Premodern Pali Philology”

Abstract: The Pali Canon has been transmitted through manuscripts for more than twenty centuries. The first critical editions of Pali texts were printed in the 19th century, based on palm-leaf manuscripts. This manuscript tradition, which underlies our printed and electronic editions, is not yet well understood. Were texts simply copied? Did the scribes understand the text? Was there any supervision by learned scholars? Was there any method, beyond mere copying, to preserve the correct readings of the text? If so, what criteria were used to choose between variant readings?

This lecture discusses one of the rare examples of textual criticism in the era of Pali manuscripts. Ariyavaṃsa of Sagaing (Burma), known for his major Abhidhamma treatise, the Maṇisāramañjūsā, is one of the most renowned Pali scholars of the 15th century. Among Ariyavaṃsa’s works is the Jātakavisodhana (“Purification of the Jātaka”), a collection of text-critical notes on the ten major Jātakas. Written in both Burmese and Pali, it is one of the most distinctive specimens of premodern Pali philology.

Participation in the 2025 Woodenfish-Waksaw Gandhara Buddhism Seminar in Pakistan

Mr. Kittipong Vongagson, a researcher at the Dhammachai International Research Institute (���ϲ�����) and a Ph.D. student at the Faculty of Buddhist Studies, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich(LMU), participated in the 2025 Woodenfish-Waksaw Gandhara Buddhism Seminar in Pakistan (January 9-18, 2025).

The seminar was organized through the collaboration of the Woodenfish Institute and the Waksaw Institute, and it invited 30 scholars and individuals interested in Buddhism in the Gandhara region (present-day Pakistan) to travel for field studies and visits to significant locations in Pakistan.

The activities during the seminar were divided into three phases based on the geographic location:

Phase 1 – Islamabad (January 9-11):

The opening of the seminar featured key representatives from Pakistan. There were lectures from experts in three fields related to Gandhara: language, art, and archaeology. These were followed by visits to key heritage sites, including Jaulian Buddhist Heritage, Mohra Moradu Heritage, Sirkup City (Ancient City of Taxila), Dharmarajika Stupa and Monastery, and the Taxila Museum.

Phase 2 – Peshawar (January 12-14):

The participants travelled from Islamabad to Peshawar, located to the north. During this phase, they visited the Ashokan Rock Edicts in Mardan, Shahbaz Garhi (inscriptions in Kharosthi script and Gandhari language), Takht-i-Bahi Buddhist Heritage Site, and the Peshawar Museum.

Phase 3 – Swat (January 15-18):

In the final phase, the seminar participants travelled to Swat, a key location in Gandhara that was part of the ancient Silk Road. The region is rich in ancient cities and numerous stupas scattered across its valleys. During this phase, they visited excavation sites and stupa monuments, including the Barikot excavation site, Shingardar Stupa, Ghaligai Buddha, Jahanabad Buddha, Butkara excavation site, Saidu Sharif Stupa, and the Swat Museum.

The participation in this program offered several benefits. The first benefit was knowledge development, as participants could engage in fieldwork, collect photographic data, and learn from experts in various fields related to Gandhara. Additionally, the program helped build relationships with scholars interested in Buddhism in the Gandhara region, and these scholars will play a key role in the future of Buddhist studies in Gandhara.

ซึ่งจัดขึ้นโดยความร่วมมือของสถาบัน Woodenfish และ สถาบัน Waksaw โดยรับสมัครนักวิชาการและผู้สนใจพระพุทธศาสนาในดินแดนคันธาระ (ปัจจุบันประเทศปากีสถาน) จำนวน 30 ท่าน เพื่อเดินทางไปศึกษาและเยี่ยมชมสถานที่จริงในประเทศปากีสถาน

โดยมีกิจกรรมตลอดโครงการดัง�Ȩ��้

การเยี่ยมชมสถานที่จะแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ช่วงขึ้นอยู่กับโซนสถานที่ตั้ง

ช่วงที่ 1 เมืองอิสลามาบัด (9-11 มกราคม)

ช่วงแรกเป็นการเปิดโครงการ มีตัวแทนคนสำคัญจากทางปากีสถานมาร่วมงาน มีการบรรยายจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางด้านคันธาระ 3 ด้านคือ ภาษา ศิลปะ และโบราณคดี สลับกับการเข้าชมสถานที่จริง อันประกอบไปด้วย Jaulian Buddhist Heritage, Mohra Moradu Heritage, Sirkup City (Ancient city of Taxila), Dharmarajika Stupa and monastery, Taxila Museum

ช่วงที่ 2 เมืองเปชวา (12-14 มกราคม)

คณะผู้เข้าร่วมได้เดินทางจากเมืองอิสลามาบัดมาสู่เมืองเปชวา ซึ่งอยู่ทางตอนเหนือของอิสลามาบัด ได้เข้าเยี่ยมชม ศิลาจารึกพระเจ้าอโศกที่เป็นอักษรขโรษฐี ภาษาคานธารี (Ashokan Rock Edicts in Mardan, Shahbaz Garhi), Takht-i-Bahi Bddhist Heritage Site, Peshawar Museum

ในช่วงสุดท้าย คณะผู้สัมมนาได้เดินทางไปเมืองสวัท ซึ่งเป็นจุดสำคัญของดินแดนคันธาระ เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเส้นทางสายไหม และมีเมืองโบราณสำคัญๆ รวมถึงสถูปเจดีย์มากมายตามหุบเขาต่างๆ ในช่วงนี้มีการเยี่ยมชมสถานที่ประกอบกับการบรรยายจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญ สถานที่ที่ไป เช่น Barikot excavation site, Shingardar stupa, Ghaligai Buddha, Jahanabad Buddha, Butkara excavation site, Saidu Sharif stupa, Swat Museum เป็นต้น

ทั้งนี้ การเข้าร่วมโครงการนี้มีประโยชน์ในหลายๆด้าน สิ่งแรกคือการพัฒนาองค์ความรู้ให้กับผู้เข้าร่วมได้ลงพื้นที่จริงเพื่อเก็บข้อมูลภาพถ่าย และเรียนรู้จากผู้เชี่ยวชาญในสาขาต่างๆที่เกี่ยวข้องกับคันธาระ นอกจากนี้ยังได้สร้างสัมพันธ์กับนักวิชาการที่สนใจพระพุทธศาสนาในดินแดนคันธาระ ซึ่งนักวิชาการเหล่านี้จะเป็นอนาคตของการศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนาในคันธาระต่อไป

DIRI Digitization project at Nakornsrithammarat

Digitization of palm-leaf manuscripts is one of DIRI’s projects to help preserve and pass on the original teachings of the Buddha written in various ancient scriptures. This time, the team found many interesting meditation scriptures, some of which were from the Ayutthaya period.

Integrated Buddhist Studies at the University of Otago, NZ

The course Buddhist Thought has been taught at the University of Otago for over seventeen years as the result of an MoU between the University and the 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation (the 60th DEF) & Dhammachai International Research Institute (���ϲ�����). The chairman of institutes, Phramaha Sudham Suratano (PhD, 9th grade of Pali Studies) will award scholarships to students who obtain the highest mark on the course in every year.

On 26 September 2024, Dr Woramat Malasart, a lecturer in a course on Buddhist philosophy “Buddhist Thought” (RELS 227/327) at the University of Otago invited Phra Suthep Thippasiriko, an abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya Wellington, to share his knowledge on Buddhist mindfulness and meditation both from theoretical and practical perspectives. Around twenty students have enrolled for the course both on campus and by distance. The students really enjoyed learning from an experienced monk, and they learned a great deal, particularly on how they can integrate the practice of mindfulness and meditation into their daily life.

รายวิชา “พุทธธรรม” ได้ถูกสอนที่มหาวิทยาลัยโอทาโก้มายาวนาน เป็นระยะเวลากว่า 17 ปี ซึ่งเป็นดอกผลจากการลงนามความร่วมมือทางวิชาการ(MoU) ระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยโอทาโก้ กับมูลนิธิ 60 ปีธรรมชัยเพื่อการศึกษา เเละสถาบันวิจัยนานาชาติธรรมชัย(���ϲ�����) ประเทศนิวซีเเลนด์ โดย พระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ป.ธ.9, ดร. ประธานอำนวยการสถาบัน ได้มีการมอบทุนการศึกษาให้กับนักศึกษาที่ทำคะแนนได้สูงสุดในรายวิชาทุกปี

วันพฤหัสบดี ที่ 26 กันยายน 2567 ดร.วรเมธ มลาศาสตร์, อาจารย์ผู้สอนรายวิชาพุทธปรัชญา “พุทธธรรม” (RELS 227/327) มหาวิทยาลัยโอทาโก้ ประเทศนิวซีเเลนด์ ได้นิมนต์พระอาจารย์สุเทพ ทิพฺพสิริโก เจ้าอาวาสวัดพระธรรมกายเวลลิงตัน มาร่วมแบ่งปันความรู้ เรื่องการเจริญสติและการทำสมาธิในพระพุทธศาสนา ในมุมมองทางทฤษฎีและการปฏิบัติ ในรายวิชานี้มีนักศึกษาชาวต่างชาติประมาณ 20 คนที่ลงทะเบียนเรียน(รวมนักศึกษาที่ลงทะเบียนเรียนในระบบทางไกลด้วย) บรรยากาศในห้องเรียนเต็มไปด้วยความสนุกสนาน ทั้งนี้นักศึกษาได้เรียนรู้จากพระอาจารย์ผู้มากประสบการณ์ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการผสมผสานการฝึกสติและการทำสมาธิเข้ากับชีวิตประจำวัน

DIRI President and team visit Hsi Lai Temple and the University of the West

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Phra Maha Sutham Suratano, Pali IX, Dr., Assistant Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, Vice President of the Union of Thai Sanghas in Oceania (UTO), President of the Dhammachai International Research Institute (���ϲ�����) of New Zealand, and Abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya Auckland, New Zealand, along with monks from Wat Phra Dhammakaya California, visited Venerable Hui Dong, Abbot of Hsi Lai Temple. Hsi Lai Temple is the largest branch of Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan and the most significant Mahayana Buddhist temple in America and Europe. Since 1994, Fo Guang Shan and Wat Phra Dhammakaya have shared a close “sister temples” relationship, fostering annual visits and joint merit-making activities.

During this visit, there were in-depth discussions on Buddhist teachings. Dr. Phra Maha Sutham expressed gratitude to Venerable Hui Dong for the historical support provided by Hsi Lai Temple, especially during the early days of Wat Phra Dhammakaya’s propagation in the United States, starting at Wat Buddha Maywood.

Venerable Hui Dong recounted that Venerable Master Hsing Yun faced numerous challenges when he first came to America, with limited Buddhist followers and resistance from other religious groups, making the propagation of Buddhist teachings difficult. Master Hsing Yun’s legacy of assisting new Buddhist temples remains a guiding principle for his disciples.

Dr. Phra Maha Sutham praised Venerable Master Hsing Yun as a model for Buddhist work and a revered teacher, emphasizing his profound teaching on the “Philosophy of Being Second,” which highlights humility and service. Master Hsing Yun believed that one should support and elevate others rather than seek personal prominence, focusing on altruism, compassion, and the collective good. Venerable Hui Dong elaborated that Master Hsing Yun preferred supporting others over seeking prominence.

This meeting strengthened the relationship between the temples, signaling a future of collaborative efforts in Buddhist education and scripture translation. After exchanging souvenirs, Venerable Hui Dong and Venerable Hui Zhi guided a temple tour, sharing insights into its construction. The visit was marked by a joyous atmosphere and mutual respect.

Following this, Dr. Phra Maha Sutham visited Dr. Minh-Hoa Ta, President of the University of the West, founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. They discussed educational development and cooperation in translating ancient scriptures, accompanied by Dr. Shakya, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, and Dr. Shou-Jen Kuo, Associate Professor and International Coordinator. The tour included campus facilities, and Dr. Phra Maha Sutham presented a Dhamma book as a token of appreciation for their warm welcome.

เข้าเยี่ยมคารวะ พระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง (Venerable Hui Dong) เจ้าอาวาสวัดซีหลาย ซึ่งเป็นวัดสาขาใหญ่ที่สุดของฝอกวงซัน (ไต้หวัน) ถือเป็นวัดนิกายมหายานที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของอเมริกาและยุโรป และวัดฝอกวงซัน (ไต้หวัน) ถือเป็นวัดพี่วัดน้องกับวัดพระธรรมกาย ประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปีพุทธศักราช 2537 ทำให้วัดซีหลาย และวัดพระธรรมกายแคลิฟอร์เนีย มีความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีต่อกันเหมือนเป็นวัดพี่วัดน้อง มีการทำบุญและแวะเวียนเยี่ยมเยือนกันในทุกปี

โดยครั้งนี้ได้มีการพูดคุยสนทนาธรรมซึ่งกันและกัน และพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ได้กล่าวขอบคุณกับพระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง ที่ในอดีตที่ผ่านมาทางวัดซีหลายได้ให้การสนับสนุนช่วยเหลือ โดยเฉพาะในยุคแรกที่วัดพระธรรมกายเข้ามาเผยแผ่ในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ยุควัดพุทธเมย์วูด ซึ่งเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของทุกวัดศูนย์สาขาในอเมริกา และวัดฝอกวงซันให้การช่วยเหลือสาขาของวัดพระธรรมกายในประเทศไต้หวันด้วย

พระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง ได้กล่าวว่า ท่านพระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือ ตอนที่มาอเมริกาท่านลำบากมาก คนเชื่อในพระศาสนามีไม่เยอะ ต่างศาสนิกกีดกัน ทำให้การเผยแผ่คำสอนเป็นไปได้ยาก จึงทำให้ท่านอยากจะช่วยเหลือทุกวัดที่เป็นศาสนาเดียวกัน ความตั้งใจนี้ ท่านได้ถ่ายทอดกับลูกศิษย์ทุกคนว่า ถ้ามีชาวพุทธมาเปิดวัดใหม่ ให้ช่วยเหลือเขาเสมอ

ซึ่งพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ได้กล่าวว่า ท่านพระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือนั้น เป็นต้นแบบเป็นตัวอย่างในการทำงาน และเป็นเสมือนอาจารย์ที่ท่าน และเหล่ากัยาณมิตรวัดพระธรรมกายทั่วโลกต่างเคารพรักท่านมาก คำสอนของท่านที่กล่าวไว้ตอนหนึ่งว่า “ไม่เป็นนายใหญ่ แต่เป็นนายรอง” นั่นดีและลึกซึ้งมาก ๆ ซึ่งพระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง กล่าวขยายความว่า ท่านพระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือเป็นคนชอบช่วยเหลือคนอื่น ไม่ห่วงตนเอง ทำงานเผยแผ่ตลอด ท่านขอเป็นที่สอง ไม่ขอเป็นที่หนึ่ง

การพบปะกันครั้งนี้ ถือเป็นการเชื่อมสัมพันธไมตรีที่สร้างความแน่นแฟ้นมากขึ้น และเป็นนิมิตหมายที่ดี โดยทั้ง 2 ท่าน ได้พูดถึงในอนาคตที่จะได้ทำงานพระพุทธศาสนาร่วมงานกันมากยิ่งขึ้น เช่น การทำงานการศึกษา การแปลพระคัมภีร์ต่าง ๆ เป็นต้น

และหลังจากที่ได้มอบของที่ระลึกซึ่งกันและกัน พระธรรมาจารย์หุ้ยตง และพระอาจารย์หุ้ยจือ ได้พานำชมวัดและให้ข้อมูลสำคัญของการสร้างวัดในส่วนต่าง ๆ ด้วย นับเป็นช่วงเวลาและบรรยากาศที่เต็มไปด้วยรอยยิ้มและความปลื้มปีติที่ได้มาเจอกัน

หลังจากนี้พระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ยังได้เดินทางไปพบปะกับ ดร.มิน โฮ ทา (Dr.Minh- Hoa-Ta) อธิการบดี University of the West ซึ่งเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยที่พระธรรมาจารย์ซิงหวินต้าซือ เป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง พร้อมทั้งมีคณาจารย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านต่าง ๆ คือ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.ศากยะ (Dr.Shakya) สาขาวิชาศาสนาศึกษา และ รองศาตราจารย์ ดร.โชว-เจน กัว (Shou-Jen Kuo) หัวหน้าผู้ประสานงานระหว่างประเทศ ซึ่งได้พูดคุยหารือแนวทางการพัฒนาการศึกษา และความร่วมมือในการแปลคัมภีร์โบราณต่าง ๆ อีกด้วย พร้อมกันนี้ยังได้นำชมสถานที่ศึกษาตามอาคารต่าง ๆ ได้ถ่ายรูปและมอบของที่ระลึกให้คณะสงฆ์ที่เดินทางไปพบหารือ ซึ่งพระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ได้มอบหนังสือธรรมะไว้ให้ที่มหาวิทยาลัย พร้อมทั้งกล่าวขอบคุณที่ให้การต้อนรับเป็นอย่างดี

Dhammachai International Research Institute and University of Oxford Forge Historic Partnership

Oxford, June 20, 2024 – In a significant development, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with This pioneering partnership is dedicated to advancing research into ancient meditation practices within Theravada Buddhism.

This collaboration comes as DIRI celebrates the 80th anniversary of its founder. The notable academic partnership with aims to delve into and document the historical meditation techniques of Theravada Buddhism, providing fresh insights into these ancient practices.

The signing ceremony, held at Oxford University, was attended by Phra Maha Sutham Suratano, Pali IX, Dr., President of DIRI (NZ), and Assistant Abbot of Dhammakaya Temple, who signed on behalf of DIRI. Professor Kate Crosby, a distinguished authority on Theravada Buddhism, represented the University of Oxford.

Phra Maha Sutham Suratano remarked on the partnership’s significance, stating, “This collaboration marks a crucial milestone in promoting the research and application of ancient meditation practices. It is an invaluable opportunity for both institutions to exchange knowledge and research expertise, deepening our understanding of Theravada Buddhism and expanding the dissemination of our findings to benefit society locally and globally.”

The project will involve close collaboration between researchers from ���ϲ����� and Oxford. Their collective efforts are aimed at uncovering and enhancing the rich traditions of ancient meditation, ensuring these practices’ continuous development and relevance in modern scholarship.

วันพฤหัสบดีที่ 20 มิถุนายน 2567 : เนื่องในวาระ อายุวัฒนมงคล ครบรอบ 80 ปี องค์สถาปนา สถาบันวิจัยนานาชาติธรรมชัย (Dhammachai International Research Institute : DIRI) ประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ทางสถาบัน ได้ร่วมลงนาม ความร่วมมือทางวิชาการ กับคณะเอเชียและตะวันออกกลางศึกษา (AMES) แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยอ๊อกซ์ฟอร์ด (University of Oxford) ประเทศอังกฤษ เพื่อวิจัยด้านกรรมฐานโบราณในพระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท นับว่าเป็นโครงการความร่วมมือครั้งประวัติศาสตร์ที่สำคัญระดับโลก

การลงนามครั้งนี้ จัดขึ้นที่มหาวิทยาลัยอ๊อกซ์ฟอร์ด โดยมี พระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ป.ธ.9, ดร. ประธานอำนวยการ สถาบันวิจัยนานาชาติธรรมชัย(���ϲ�����) ประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ผู้อำนวยการสำนักพระปริยัติธรรม และผู้ช่วยเจ้าอาวาสวัดพระธรรมกาย เป็นผู้แทนลงนาม ร่วมกับตัวแทนของมหาวิทยาลัยอ๊อกซ์ฟอร์ด คือ ศาสตราจารย์เคท ครอสบี้ จากมหาวิทยาลัยออกฟอร์ด ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท ชั้นแนวหน้าของโลก

นับเป็นก้าวสำคัญ ในการส่งเสริมการศึกษาวิจัยกรรมฐานโบราณ เพื่อประยุกต์ใช้ และเผยแพร่ความรู้ด้านพระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาทให้กว้างขวางยิ่งขึ้น

พระมหาสุธรรม สุรตโน ป.ธ.9, ดร. กล่าวว่า ความร่วมมือครั้งนี้ เป็นการเปิดโอกาส ในการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ และทักษะทางการวิจัย ระหว่างสององค์กร โดยมีเป้าหมายเพื่อเสริมสร้างความเข้าใจในกรรมฐานโบราณ และเผยแพร่ผลการวิจัย เพื่อสร้างประโยชน์แก่สังคม ทั้งในระดับท้องถิ่นและระดับนานาชาติ

ในโครงการนี้ ทีมนักวิจัยจากทั้งสองสถาบัน จะทำงานร่วมกันอย่างใกล้ชิด โดยมุ่งหวังที่จะนำความรู้ และประสบการณ์ มาพัฒนางานวิจัยด้านกรรมฐานโบราณอย่างต่อเนื่อง เป็นลำดับต่อไป
