Topic: Gender and Buddhist Doctrine
Speaker: Prof. Alice Collett (University of St Andrews)
In this thought-provoking lecture, Prof. Collett critically examines gender representations in Buddhist texts, challenging traditional assertions of female inferiority using fundamental Buddhist doctrines such as pratītya-samutpāda (dependent arising) and anātman (non-self). She explores whether Buddhist teachings genuinely distinguish between male and female natures through an analysis of skandhas (Pāli: khandhas, constituent parts of being) and indriyas (faculties).
