An international Buddhist research centre has opened in Dunedin, enabling academic links with the University of Otago to be further developed.

The Dhammachai International Research Institute of New Zealand and Australia, which is housed in the former BNZ building at the corner of London and Pitt Sts, was formally opened earlier this month.

The independent research centre is funded by the 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation of Australia and New Zealand, which was established by the abbot of a large Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2004.

The institute promotes and supports the study of early Buddhist manuscripts, their preservation and other Buddhist studies.

Associate Prof William Sweetman, who heads the Otago theology and religion department, said a third five-year memorandum of understanding between the university and the foundation was signed last year.

Since 2007, the foundation had funded a lecturer’s salary in the Otago religion programme, partly funded another part-time lecturer and provided full scholarships for Thai students, he said.

A new course-work MA in Buddhist studies would be introduced next year, to be taught by Otago staff but with one paper taught each year by a distinguished international scholar of Buddhist studies.

The foundation had learned more about the academic approach to religion taken by Western universities, and Otago academics had learned more about Buddhism, he said.

To give the teachings of the Buddha is the most precious gift a Buddhist can offer.

For that reason, staff at the University of Otago felt fortunate and thrilled to receive a copy of the Tipitaka (Buddhist scriptures) from the 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation of New Zealand and Australia on Thursday.

University theology and religion lecturer Dr Will Sweetman said the original Tipitaka is written in Pali, an Indian language related to Sanskrit, but the scriptures presented are in the language of three Theravada Buddhist majority countries – Thai, Burmese and Sinhala.

The 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation was established in 2004 to promote research into Buddhism, and in 1997 the University of Otago signed a memorandum of understanding with the Foundation to promote Buddhist studies.

Dr Sweetman said under the agreement, the Foundation sponsors two graduate students from Thailand each year to conduct research in Buddhism at the Theology and Religion Department.

“The gift of the Tipitaka marks a new phase in our relationship with the announcement that the Foundation will also support a visiting lecturer at Otago for three years.”

Dr Sweetman said Dr Chaisit Suwan Varangkul had been selected for the position and will teach papers on Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism, and on the Sanskrit language.

Nine Buddhist monks chanted a section of the scriptures before University of Otago librarian Sue Pharo accepted the gift from 60th Dhammachai Education Foundation of New Zealand and Australia chairman and general secretary Phra Palad Sudhammo.
